Food Composition

Protein | Carbohydrates | Fiber | Fats

Just as how a pet food is formulated, for specific breed size and life stage, WHAT the food is formulated with is of equal importance.

Protein
It is important to have many various sources of protein (4 or more) within your pet’s food, as well as protein with high biological value to achieve maximum digestibility and an amino acid balance. Meat, fish, and eggs all have a high biological value, which means they have a high percentage of protein in the form of digestible, usable amino acids. Protein is essential for the growth of strong bones and the development of strong muscles.

Best Years uses six to seven different forms of protein in all formulations: Beef meal, a protein with high biological value, is the first ingredient in most of our formulations. In some of our products, up to 32% of the formulation is beef meal. We also use soybean meal, another high quality source of protein and corn gluten meal, which doubles as a source of protein and fiber. All Best Years formulations include dried egg product, salmon meal, brewer’s yeast, and wheat germ meal- all sources of protein. Egg has a biological value of 100, the highest biological value and sets the standard for which other proteins are judged. Salmon meal and other fish meals have a biological value of 92, high sources of quality protein. Both brewer’s yeast and wheat germ meal are sources of protein, but are also rich in vitamins. Brewer’s yeast contains many B-vitamins, while wheat germ meal is a natural source of vitamin E.

Carbohydrates
To put simply, carbohydrates are sources of energy for your pet. Soluble carbohydrates are the starchy portion of a plant that can be easily broken down in the digestive tract of dogs. Soluble carbohydrates are found in cereal grains such as rice, wheat, and corn and are easily and rapidly digested.

Ground rice, ground yellow corn, and wheat bran are the main sources of carbohydrates used in Best Years formulations. To provide maximum digestibility, resulting in reduced stool volume and odor, Best Years uses ground rice which is over 90% digestible. The ground yellow corn and wheat bran used in Best Years are converted into energy by dogs, allowing them to lead an active lifestyle.

Fiber
Even though fiber is not considered a nutrient, it is essential for optimal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. Fiber is made up of several different compounds all of which are carbohydrates. Improved colon health is a benefit of having fiber in the diet. Fiber will help treat both diarrhea and constipation and possibly help reduce the risk of colon cancer.

As seen above, corn gluten meal doubles as a source of protein and fiber, as do many other ingredients. Ground rice, ground yellow corn, and wheat bran all have duel functions in your pet’s food as carbohydrates and fibers. Other sources of fiber found in Best Years foods are dried beet pulp, inulin, and yucca schidigera extract, all aiding in the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

Fats
Fats provide energy, flavors, and essential fatty acids to your dog’s diet. Per unit of weight, fats contain approximately two-and-one-fourth times the energy as an equivalent weight of protein or carbohydrates. The fats that are found in your dog’s food are around 90% digestible.

We use chicken fat, soybean oil, salmon oil, and wheat germ oil in all Best Years formulations to provide the essential fatty acids that your pet deserves. Both chicken fat and soybean oil provide sources of energy as well as omega 6 fatty acids. The salmon oil used in Best Years provides a natural source of omega 3 fatty acids, which help in the control of the inflammatory processes. The combination of omega 6 and omega 3 essential fatty acids are very important in assuring an exuberant skin and coat with luster and sheen for your pet. Wheat germ oil, like wheat germ meal, provides a natural source of vitamin E.
